The Greatest Law is the Law of Love
Matthew 22: 34-40
Once more the first reading and the Gospel go hand in hand. Indeed, the reading of the Book of Exodus prepares us for the answer given by Jesus in today’s Gospel. Jesus is faithful to his Jewish religious tradition that asks us to love God above all things, but at the same time challenges the believer of all times to put that love to God in concrete love towards our brothers and sisters. For Jesus, only when we love our neighbors, do we fulfill the whole law.
In this short time as pastor, I have experienced multiple ways as many of you love and serve our sick brothers and sisters, immigrants, abandoned and/or single mothers.
Once again Jesus reminds us that prayer must
go hand in hand with action. We cannot say that we love God if we are not in solidarity with those who suffer today in our society. Jesus teaches us that everything comes from God and that everything that we are is from God. Likewise, we cannot fall into the trap of separating from what is essential of what is apparently secondary divine law. Jesus asks us not to neglect the baptismal call and his implication of making us brothers and sister with all who form his Church. Jesus manifests that we must love God with our entire person (heart, soul and mind) and makes it visible in the love of our neighbor. Let us work together to recreate this law of love in our parish.
Conversation with Christ:
Dear Jesus, give me the grace to love others with all my effort and good will. I want to contemplate you, Lord, so that I may learn from you how to love them to the point of giving my life for them.
Resolution:
I will practice charity towards others in a very concrete way.
